VIDVIEW / CHROME
VIDVIEW for Chrome
Prepare supported video or audio with VIDVIEW, or save a direct media file open in your tab.
Download Chrome extension ZIP — 0.5.1
This is an public beta for manual installation in desktop Chrome. It is not published in the Chrome Web Store.
Install
- Download and extract the ZIP.
- Open chrome://extensions in Chrome and enable Developer mode.
- Click Load unpacked, then select the extracted folder containing manifest.json.
- Pin VIDVIEW from Chrome's Extensions menu.
Download
Open a supported video page, click VIDVIEW, and select Show download options. Choose Video or Audio and click Download. Closing the toolbar popup is safe. Keep the VIDVIEW Downloads tab open while preparing. Closing or navigating the Downloads tab pauses tracking; reopen it in the same browser session to check the existing job. Chrome continues a file transfer once saving has started. Chrome saves the completed file in its normal downloads folder.
Use Open Downloads tab to check existing work. For an HTTPS media file already open in a tab, choose Download file. Use the full website for playlists.
Recovery and known limitations
After connection loss, Resume observation checks the same job. Retry file transfer reuses the prepared file and can fail if it has expired or was already deleted. An uncertain submission is never automatically submitted again. Server cancellation may be unavailable; the UI identifies local/unconfirmed cancellation.
The ZIP includes KNOWN_LIMITATIONS.md. Finish existing jobs before replacing or reloading the extension. Worker/tunnel outages were simulated in isolated browser tests; the live Windows worker and tunnel were kept running. Chrome Web Store publication and backend maintenance deployment remain separate.
Before testing
Download only media you own or have permission to save. Source availability and format support vary. Do not resubmit blindly after an unknown response; check existing downloads first. Browser restart or extension reload clears session tracking. The current backend requires its media worker to remain available.
Privacy and permissions
The extension reads the active tab address when invoked, stores preferences and session job state, and uses Chrome's downloads permission. Access to the service is limited to vidview.net. No page scripts, cookies or browsing-history access are requested. A supported video URL is sent to VIDVIEW only after your explicit action.
